As my first internship, I thought it was a excellent experience into the field of fashion. What skills i’ve had before my internship in design have now grown to where I can make my own patterns for clothing and I do understand the basics of marketing. My daily duties were somewhat challenging. Cutting out the pattern for the clothing to be sent to the sewer was one of the main jobs I had to take in. It may sound like an easy job, but having the pattern at a precise angle and making sure that you have enough pieces to be placed in production was a job that took patience and skill. I think i've definitely developed a better understanding on how to make patterns and cutting out the clothing. I've even made my own pattern for a top. Something new i've learned from the internship is how to make different types of stitches with button, and making buttonholes. I've never really understood how to make a buttonhole, but now I do. I’ve also learned how to sew a pattern together. I already had a general understanding of how to put two pieces of clothing together, but of course this was the level of sewing to sides together to make a pillow cover. Instead I've learned how the pattern pieces for skirts, shirts, and dresses fit in together which was used for sample for store who wanted to market her clothing. Setting up sample patterns and putting together  a booklet for store was a simple job and gave me the general idea for what buyers need to see if they want to purchase an order from the designer. My new skills I think will bring me far into what my passion for designing.

Challenges are faced everyday, and I think my challenge  that i've faced in my internship would be sewing the pattern together, and helping with the marketing of the designers clothing. I've been the designer's assistant for the internship since day one, when i helped with an photoshot to market her clothing line. She has really taught me much over this period of time to place the pattern together. There's certain roles when putting them together, and how everything fits. It looked to be a simple job, putting the clothing together, but it was not. My first few tries I did mess up and had to restart on the stitches. Which frustrated me and I was growing anxious and impatient. She would allow me to take  a breather and then start again. After a few tries I did finally get the sewing down, as was able to put pattern together.

My overall experience as an intern was exciting and something I would be looking forward to do again, with another designer. The experience was a great overall understanding of what it takes to be a designer and what the requirement are to have the ability to design clothing. I've enjoyed every minute of my internship.

Month 1

The first month in the studio at desiree's house where she does all her designer things was interesting and a learning experience. I learned how to measure and cut out pattern with a frame of the piece of clothing. It took a few tries to master but I got it down after. I also learned how to do inventory. Desiree was showing me how she does inventory and why it's important. I also wa responsable to do last touches on clothing pieces that would be sent out to stores that sell Desiree's clothing. It was a great first month.

Internship

Month 2

My second month, i've really almost got everything down. We did pretty much the same thing for as the first month. My skill in cutting out clothing got pretty better, and I learned a few new skills with the sewing machine. I also did some more finishing touches on clothing pieces. All an improvement from last months and still developing new skills.

Month 3

My third month was really fun. Christmas was right around the corner and Desiree gave the duty to make stocky's for charity out of scrap fabric. This really allowed me to get creative with the style of the stocking. There was also a fashion show right around the corner that needed attention. I helped Desiree with the finishing touched with the fashion show, and helped get everything prepared. I also went on my first field trip to see all the store that Desiree promotes her clothing line.

Month 4

This month  went back to somewhat normal. I was given the duty to pick out patterns and cut out more prints. We were also trying to choose what to do the with spring clothing line. I helped her pick out some fabrics that I thought would be great for spring. I also went into her fabric room to help fold all the yards of fabric surrounding the area. Also a little more inventory that went around the stores being promoted to sell the clothing.

Month 5

This was a normal fifth month. Desiree just choose what fabrics would be in her spring line and I was there to help cut out the patterns. Definitely a Master at cutting patterns and doing finishing touches on dresses that needed buttons. I also started to learn how to put together pattern by sewing them. Really good learning experience this month at tought me so much about the sewing part of fashion. Excited to see what's in store for next month.

Month 6

My sixth month, spring line was finally finished. I helped desiree to some deliveries at a few shops and did some arens with her for her clothing. It's always nice to see old faces when delivering the clothing. I also learned a new technique with sewing a pattern. It was pretty cool. And putting together patterns for has become much easier. I did the similar duties as cutting out patterns for the spring line.

Month 7
My seventh month consiste of touching up on the spring clothing line. The touch ups needed to be finished to be delivered, were sewing on buttons and linin. I've even got to review how to make a buttonhole for some pieces. I also did some more inventory once the finishing touches were done and the pieces had to be delivered to the shops

Month 8

My eight month was really busy. Desiree was doing a few trunk show the last month and this coming weekend. I helped her get everything ready with inventory and clothing that needed to be done. I also cut out some extra pieces of clothing that would go to the sewer. Excited for desiree and hoping she does well with the trunk show. Also meet her friend that would be doing the show with her own line of accessories.

Month 9

My ninth month, and my last. I only met desiree the one time to help with a show she was doing in jack london square. It was really fun,  but slow. I helped her set up the stand and was her right hand in selling the clothing. Really simple and easy. I also learned how to sew on a clip to the skirts she was telling at the market. Really am going to miss the internship, but also looking forward to new possibilities.

Each month I completed 16 hours.
